Friday, June 20th at 8:30pm – Mears Park
Emmet Cohen:
Multifaceted American jazz pianist and composer Emmet Cohen has emerged as one of his generation’s pivotal figures in music and the related arts. A recognized prodigy, Cohen began Suzuki method piano instruction at age three, and his playing quickly became a mature melding of musicality, technique, and concept. Downbeat observed that his “nimble touch, measured stride and warm harmonic vocabulary indicate he’s above any convoluted technical showmanship.” In the same spirit, Cohen himself has noted that playing jazz is “about communicating the deepest levels of humanity and individuality; it’s essentially about connections,” both among musicians and with audiences. He leads his namesake ensemble, the “Emmet Cohen Trio,” is a vibrant solo performer, and is in constant demand as a sideman. Possessing a fluid technique, an innovative tonal palette, and an extensive repertoire, Cohen plays with the command of a seasoned veteran and the passion of an artist fully devoted to his medium.
Emmet Cohen is committed to the intergenerational transfer of artistic knowledge, history, and traditions. His signature professional undertaking is the “Masters Legacy Series,” a celebratory set of recordings and interviews honoring legendary jazz musicians. He serves as both producer and pianist for each album in the series. The goal of this landmark, ongoing project is to provide musicians of multiple generations a forum to transfer the unwritten folklore that is America’s unique musical idiom.
Emmet Cohen’s exacting keyboard artistry has garnered numerous accolades from the international jazz community. He placed first in both the American Jazz Pianists competition (2014) and the Phillips Piano Competition at the University of West Florida (2011). He was a finalist in the prestigious American Pianists Association’s Cole Porter Fellowship (2015, 2011) and the Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition (2011). Cohen has appeared in world-renowned jazz events, including the Newport, Monterey, North Sea, Bern, Edinburgh, Detroit, and Jerusalem jazz festivals, as well as the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics in Russia. He has also performed at the Village Vanguard, the Blue Note, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, Birdland, Jazz Standard, London’s Ronnie Scott’s, Jazzhaus Montmartre in Copenhagen, Lincoln Center’s Rose Hall, the Cotton Club in Tokyo, and the Kennedy Center, and was received in the Oval Office by President Obama. ROBERT LEHMANN & TOBY RAMASWAMY
Raised in culturally mixed households in the U.S., Robert Lehmann and Toby Ramaswamy prefer to exist in the in between – somewhere at the intersection of the Philippines, India, Germany, and the Midwest. Fittingly, the keys and drums duo play improvised music that’s hazy in its boundaries – not quite jazz, not quite neoclassical, not quite minimalist, not quite drum and bass. On keyboard, Lehmann pulls in melancholic melodies from Romantic and Impressionist era studies, the heavy bass lines of electronic music, and influences from years of playing in afrobeats and Arabic music ensembles. Ramaswamy glides between tight, propulsive strings of beats and loose, open textures evoking nature. For Ramaswamy and Lehmann, improvisation is a commitment to vulnerability and an avenue into liminality as much as it is an approach to crafting sound. The duo is currently working on their debut album of improvised music featuring Shahzad Ismaily and Paul Taylor.

Sarah Navratil is a Minnesota-born saxophonist, woodwind doubler, artist, and composer now based in New York City. This work translates to her visual art as well. Both areas of her work carry themes of the natural world as well as childhood nostalgia, womanhood, human experience, and are intended to draw closer relationships between humans and the natural world.
Sarah holds a Bachelor’s degree in Jazz and Contemporary Media from the Eastman School of Music. She also studied Saxophone performance and Woodwind doubling under Charles Pillow. She has also performed at and band-led at various venues and festivals, most notably the Twin Cities Jazz Festival, Rochester Women in Music Festival, Rochester International Jazz Festival, Nazareth College women in music festival, and the Eau Claire Jazz Festival.

This includes curating and bandleading non-male dominated groups for the 2022 Eastman Chamber jazz concert, 2022 Nazareth College Women in Music Festival, and the 2022 Rochester Women in Music Festival where she organized and moderated panel discussions centering gender minorities in jazz featuring speakers like Roxy Coss and Ingrid Jensen. TERI ROIGER CELEBRATES THE MUSIC OF ABBEY LINCOLN
An American jazz musician, vocalist, pianist, songwriter, educator, and producer, Teri lives in New York City and also spends time in New York’s Hudson Valley. She began playing piano at age 5, and played church organ throughout her teens. When she discovered jazz in her early 20s – and soon after made her first demo with the legendary stride pianist, Butch Thompson – her musical path was set.
One afternoon in Minneapolis, a young Teri Roiger sat down at a piano amidst a group of seasoned musicians, and played a burning rendition of John Coltrane’s Giant Steps. An astounded nearby bass player said, “Hey, you aren’t supposed to be able to do that,” a remark that ignited Teri’s determination to pursue a life in jazz.
For the Jazz Fest, Teri will perform her tribute to Abbey Lincoln. Teri’s 2012 release, DEAR ABBEY: The Music of Abbey Lincoln, produced by Brian Bacchus, made the Jazz Journalist Association’s “best of” vocal releases list for 2012, and was featured as one of the five best tribute releases in NYC Jazz Record’s January 2013 issue.
Jack DeJohnette, legendary jazz drummer & 2012 NEA Jazz Master: Teri has an intuitive laid back sense of time reminiscent of Abbey Lincoln and Betty Carter but with her own uniqueness.
Mark Myers, JazzWax.com: A vocalist who wraps (Abbey) Lincoln’s complex songs around her finger…

A funky instrumental trio consisting of three of the twin cities most seasoned musicians (we’re talking fresh herbs – none of the stale dried out store bought stuff). Trench Size Trio (TST) has been developing a sound and a body of work for close to a decade and not showing any signs of slowing down. Tom Reichert is the founder and has been playing with Joey Van Phillips for over two decades. So, it’s no mystery that their symmetry together has been a natural progression. Jim Anton, a long-time touring musician to the stars, has more recently settled down in the twin cities and has become a household name to musicians and listeners alike. Together the three have developed a very unique sound, a cohesive musical bonding that gives a joyful listening experience. TST plays all original music leaning towards a back beat heavy sound with a jazz sense of improvisation. The melodies are catchy and quirky at the same time, but easily accessible to the average listener.
Two of their most recent compositions, “Jiggle the Handle” and “Can We Sing”, have been self-released and are available on all streaming platforms.
