The American Straight 8ths Quintet is a project conceived by bassist Sam Worthington and drummer Phil Hey. How might a band sound, they asked themselves, if its repertoire was primarily selected from the great and underperformed tradition of straight 8th jazz music? Curiosity killed the cat, and they formed a band upon that purpose. Straight 8th music, usually relegated to one tune in a set, will not be treated as a garnish on June 11th, but rather as an entire meal which the American Straight 8ths Quintet is excited to serve you. You can expect to hear strains of latin jazz, boogaloo, the Chicago thing, and rock n roll. Composers include George Adams, Eddie Harris, Lee Morgan and Keith Jarrett.
